Carly Cushnie: The Melanated Fashion Maven You Should Know

If the world were to stop tomorrow, Carly Cushnie’s legacy would live on for years to come. A notable fashion icon of the century, Carly Cushnie has been gracious enough to share with the world her magnificent and minimalist creations for over 10 years now and shows no signs of slowing down.
As half of the former duo, Cushnie et Ochs, Carly Cushnie, a London born, Jamaican queen, has irreverently provided a source of light in the dark world of fashion, both through her kaleidoscopic designs, and as one of the few black designers to receive the recognition they deserve in a European dominated industry. Since splitting with her designer partner, Michelle Ochs, in earlier part of 2018, Carly has gone on to give the world what we’ve been waiting for: a solo collection, fittingly named Cushnie, that infuses her Jamaican roots and experiences living in Paris and New York, as inspiration for her first collection for the brand. Carly unveiled her eponymous line during this years Spring 2019 New York Fashion Week, and let’s just say she did not disappoint!

Breathtaking looks from the Carly Spring 2019 NYFW show
Teeming over with a posy of diverse models, from African and Asian models to curvy girls owning their assets, Cushnie’s first collection spewed sexy island vibes. Models floated down the runway in sexy silhouettes, their bodies bathed in sun-kissed hues perfect for a sunset dinner in Kingston or yacht party off the Almafi coast. Needless to say, I want every item that graced that runway!

When she isn’t busy designing pure art, Carly can be found traveling with her handsome husband, Oscar Cantu, volunteering at The Lower East Side Girls Club, and collaborating with Maybelline. A true maverick in her own right, Carly Cushnie is an inspiration to all, especially young black women aspiring to break into the fashion industry. Her efforts and successes span beyond herself, creating opportunities for women of color that didn’t exist previously, and for that, we thank you, Carly.
