September gave music lovers and fans a lot—new Drake, Lil Nas X, Chlöe Bailey, and more. New music is being released daily, but these are the hot new albums and singles to listen to right now.
Drake – Certified Lover Boy
The long-awaited Drake album dropped September 3 and was an immediate hit. Drake originally hinted at a new album in the spring of 2019 and announced it would be released in January 2021. However, the drop date was pushed and finally released this month.
It features artists he’s previously worked with like Future, Travis Scott, Young Thug, 21 Savage, Lil Wayne, and more. And includes songs with new artists such as Yebba and Tems.
Vulture describes the album as “more like Drake’s Expendables. Every sound is crisp, expensive. Every guest is accomplished and well-rehearsed. But it still feels predictable. Drake’s rapping is impactfully tight.”
“Way 2 Sexy” featuring Future and Young Thug has been on Billboard’s Hot 100 for two weeks now and is currently number two on the chart. He also has “Knife Talk” featuring 21 Savage and Project Pat on the chart at number four.
Lil Nas X – MONTERO
Montero’s self-titled debut album was released on September 17 with one of the best album rollouts. Lil Nas X gave fans and haters several videos, social media posts, and even a full interview with People magazine to prepare people for what was to come.
Through the album, Lil Nas X addresses wanting to move on from “Old Town Road,” the song that originally put him on the map. He also discusses body image, sex, relationships with himself and the music industry, confidence, and sadness across 15 songs. Prominent pop stars and rappers like Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Jack Harlow, and Miley Cyrus were featured.
“Lil Nas X has little interest in deconstructing the conventional structures of a pop song or the traditional narrative arc of an album: He clearly wants these songs of queer yearning to be legible to the mainstream,” wrote Lindsay Zoladz for The New York Times.
Although originally released as a single, “Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow is number six on the Billboard Hot 100, where it’s stayed for eight weeks now. While “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” has 25 weeks on the charts and is number 13.
Chlöe – “Have Mercy”
If you’ve been following Chloe Bailey from the sister duo Chloe x Halle on Instagram for the past few months, you’ve seen the original preview of her new solo single, “Have Mercy.” She released the preview in honor of her 23rd birthday and although it was less than a minute long, fans knew it was going to be a hit.
Since July, she’s shared snippets of the song on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, gearing fans up for its eventual release. The full version of the song and its music video was released on September 10 and has been on the Billboard Hot 100 for a week.
Chlöe also performed the song at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Teen Vogue praised her performance noting, “Her stage presence and impeccable [choreography] injected some life into the show’s midpoint.”
This new single is being shared across social media platforms with positive reviews.
Baby Keem – The Melodic Blue
Baby Keem’s last album was in 2019 and while he’s had several singles since then, “The Melodic Blue” is an exciting new addition to his discography.
The first hint that new music was coming was the release of the album single and music video for “family ties” featuring Kendrick Lamar. The music video has over 18 million views on YouTube while the song has been on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks.
Pitchfork describes the album as “flecked with more intimate writing than usual.” The article continues, “Keem uses the opportunity to expand his well-established fascination with trap and melody to feature-length—with mixed results.”
Some of “The Melodic Blue” is different from Baby Keem’s previous work, but it also features some favorite singles like “durag activity” featuring Travis Scott.
Lucky Daye – “Over”
Earlier this year, R&B singer Lucky Daye released his seven-song album “Table For Two,” featuring Ari Lennox, Yebba, Mahalia, and more. Since then, he’s been featured in other artist’s songs.
This month, he surprised fans with “Some Things I Don’t Mention,” a short series on Facebook. And on September 22, he released a new single and music video called “Over” which features Jordyn Woods as the video love interest. The song samples Musiq SoulChild’s 2002 hit “Half Crazy.”
The song describes what it’s like to struggle to let go of an ex, especially when they won’t let go either. He sings “I’m just tryna get closure, But you pulling me closer and closer, Phone ringing like over and over, ‘Cause you keep calling me back, Why you keep calling me back?”
There aren’t any hints of a new album just yet, but fans can enjoy the single in the meantime.
